We were assigned to pick 2 films that have a similar opening sequence to ours. I've picked The Hunger Games and The Matrix.
The matrix
We witness the build up of the enigma within one of our main characters: the biologist (Peter). Towards the end of their opening sequence, we're introduced to a shadow of a person and we also see a view of another person that's already seated which is portrayed by a over the shoulder shot. This is similar to our opening sequence, as there's going to be a slight view of the upper class worker and the biologist is going to be seated.
-Also similar as the pixelated font in the beginning of the clip stands out. We plan to use something similar to this. (Three months earlier & three months later bit)
-About a computer programmer who maintains a double life. (Thomas Anderson & Neo, the hacker) He's previously come across the phrase 'The Matrix'. Another hacker informs him that a man called Morpheus can tell him the actual meaning of that phrase. Eventually, Neo and Morpheus meet but warns him that once he knows he can't go back to living his normal life. Neo accepts and agrees to swallow a red pill. Next minute he wakes up in a liquid filled vessel. He finds himself connected by cables to an electrical system. He's then rescued by Morpheus and is brought upon his ship. He explains that there's conflict between humans and intelligent machines that they had created. The rest of the film includes them being trapped in the Matrix, a shared simulation of the world. As a rebel against the machines, Neo must return to the Matrix and confront the agents: super-powerful computer programs devoted to snuffing out Neo and the entire human rebellion.
Brief synopsis
The Hunger Games
- This is set in a dystopian period focusing on the life of Katniss Everdeen. Every year the capitol arrive and host an annual event where 24 people in the course of 12 districts (2 people per district) between the ages of 12-16 are randomly picked to train then take part in a televised fight located in an arena. When everyone gathers up ready for the raffle, Katniss' younger sister unfortunately gets picked but Katniss volunteers to take her position as she doesn't want her sister to suffer. Katniss is then joined by other unlucky tribute Peeta Mellark who's in the same district as her (District 12). They are both extremely horrified and get respect from the crowd as they know that only one of them will depart the arena alive. They are both joined by their trainer Haymitch Abernathy, former winner of the games. He informs them that they need to impress the audience in prior to the games so that they can receive sponsors from them. Sponsors will help them once they begin the games as 'a sip of water or box of matches are the difference between life and death' (Haymitch says). They both begin training and are ready to fight for their lives.
This is related to our opening sequence as it has aspects of advanced technology showing through a hologram. Although this part is not viewed in the opening sequence. It's shown throughout the film and we plan to incorportate this technique. Near the end of the opening sequence, there's a mid-shot then comes to a close up of Katniss walking towards the door, we can see the derelict room and the staircase which compares to our beginning scene (filmed underneath the theatre staircase)
